What is a ‘place’ in horse racing?
Quite simply a ‘place’ is the position the horse finishes a race in. For example if a horse wins a race it comes 1st, if a horse comes 2nd its 2nd. In some races with a large number of horses some bookies will pay out if a horse finishes the race in 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th position. Horse Racing festivals such as Cheltenham or Ascot are particularly well known for this.
What is an ‘Extra Place’ in horse racing?
Now we’ve understood what a place is in horse racing you may have probably already guessed what an ‘extra place’ is going to be! An ‘extra place’ is where the bookies add one (or more) additional places to their standard place classification on a particular race. For example they may offer to ‘pay 7 places on a race’ instead of the standard 3 places. The ‘extra place’ in this instance cover 4th, 5th, 6th and 7th. What are my Extra Place top tips?
Some of my biggest profits have come from big underlayed winners and BOG. I typically underlay most of my bets by about 20% sometimes more. If you are starting out I would underlay on the place only by about 10% to play it safe until you learn more.
Don’t bet on more places than a bookmaker is offering. E.g. If the bookmaker is offering 4 places don’t bet on more than that.
Whilst your learning, take horses on implied odds of at least 12 or more on a match of 80%+.
Look to keep qualifying losses down. E.g. for £100 profit, £5 ql.
Please note, the best odds are typically found between 10 minutes up and to race time. You have to be quick on your ‘toes’…learn to walk before you run etc. Start out on easy horse racing officers before doing extra places.
You will need a bank of at least £1000+ for your exchanges, ideally more. The more you have the more of the field you can cover. You can do EP with several hundred in your exchange but you won’t be able to make bigger profits.
Be consistent, don’t take risks, don’t chase your losses and learn from matched betting extra place forums.

(Small typo, it's obviously for CYL5.) Gonna be short and concise for once with this "essay"... except on the "bookmaker" part. Maybe some know what to do in CYL5, maybe some are hesitating on what to do, maybe there are newcomers who played FEH for less than a year... but no worries, this guide is there to give some quick pointers. For those who don't know what is CYL (Choose Your Legends), it's a yearly community poll allowing Fire Emblem fans to vote on their favorite characters of the franchise, with real consequences on FEH: the top 2 winners on the male & female side get a Brave alt (slated to be released around August, ~6 months after the poll which is more or less the timeframe for units to be produced in general). Now, that's the simplistic view on this event. To be more insightful, CYL has several marketing purposes that are more or less obvious:
It's a two-stage promotion campaign, with the first one being the community poll to create public engagement and maintain player retention. Community poll oblige, this can be an indicator to gauge the popularity of characters and influence **future banners' unit choices, be it New Heroes, seasonals/alts or even Resplendent skins.
The second layer is the CYL banner release around August, which has high player recruitment power (be it the free CYL unit pick or the sheer appeal of that yearly banner). IS usually pushes major advertisement campaigns online and offline at that time to attract new players (more on that below regarding 3H).
Now, also consider other remarks and changes that may matter:
With the Nintendo account log-in condition added in regards to botting concerns, we can expect two real consequences on CYL5. The first one is a possible lower amount of total votes (~1,1M on CYL4), which may potentially harm more popular characters (as casual votes may be weaker). The second one is better accuracy in overall votes, as FEH players' own votes would have higher weight than in past years... which may or may not matter considering that most unreleased characters have mediocre, if not low vote numbers (some hover around 1k, the rest is quite below).
CYL5 results may only have real influence on unit choices past the CYL5 banner, or more accurately after September-October. The reason is that units take more or less 6-8 months to be produced, so all lineups from now to September-October may be still influenced by CYL4 standings.
Speaking about New Heroes banners, those generally take some of the most popular picks and a few lesser popular ones based on CYL standings, especially if they have ties to the higher-ranked characters (Lena/Julian), are decently appreciated (Mustafa) and/or relevant in their game (Veld, despite 13 paltry votes made up by his "final boss" status). The more votes a character has, the better its release odds are, even for lesser popular ones (since IS won't dig too low, there are limits to that).
It's not a waste to vote on already-released characters (who tend to gather less support after one inclusion in FEH), as it can matter for alt/skin choices.
Overall votes for each game can matter for the likelihood of New Heroes (and even alt) lineups (along with banner performance). Thracia being dead last for 3 subsequent editions (second-to-last in CYL1, not that it's much better) doesn't help it, while the massive 3H backing (~40% of overall votes) may be announcing a steady wave of New Heroes and alt releases this year. Won't make detailed guesses as I don't expect a major shake-up in overall votes for most games.
Regarding the fact that the CYL banner release is a player recruitment phase, it can be assumed that a huge amount of the casual fanbase was exposed to 3H, if not the FE franchise for the first time. As such, the unit design choices (promoted forms) may've been deliberate to cater to those casuals/newcomers, so that they'd play FEH and grab a popular 3H character in a familiar outfit. Whether this, recency bias decay and the required log-in to vote would have consequences on CYL5 standings is uncertain at this point.
Intermediate rankings are usually published around Day 3 or 4, and they can change the tide of end results. See Veronica who managed to win in CYL2, or Eliwood in CYL3. It's highly probable that mid-term standings may have big influence this time, given tough competition and possible rally forces (Chrom/Robin, if not an outsider on the male side... see below for details).
Now, what are the main contenders for the winning spots, and which threats should be taken into account? Here's a "bookmaker" guide that's mostly up to date (with a day one appendix due to an X factor from 3H).
Male Bracket
Marth
Status & goal: Favorite, finally being within Top 2 (if not #1) Strengths: Fame (including Smash), old-school status (first Lord) & huge pity factor due to losing three times by a small margin (meaning that he did traditionally well on past years). Can rally wide support, moreso than Chrom/MRobin who are a bit weaker and overlapping a lot with Marth's backing (more historical Smash figure, older protagonist, higher pity factor). Less alt-sensitive due to the above factors (his existing alts won't really harm his performance). Also add weaker competition on the male side (3H contenders may lose in traction as Felix got an alt and Ashe doesn't have the same traction, Chrom/MRobin are divided). Weaknesses: Voter complacency, mostly. But proper support and past failures may offset that. Possible strategy: Voting for him from day one in order to have the highest vote amount possible at mid-terms, in case of an upset. Interim Results: On par with predictions, but slightly at risk of being overthrown by Gatekeeper for #1, and maybe Chrom for #2. Complacency should be avoided.
Chrom/MRobin
Status & goal: Runner-ups, at least one of them within Top 2 (both being ideal for fans, but hard to expect) Strengths: Did very well over the past CYL editions, and with weaker competition, one of them could potentially grab a winning slot with proper support. MRobin being perceived as neglected alt-wise (no Legendary and/or Levin Sword, FGrima getting an alt but not the male variant) could generate pity support. But Chrom remains a choice with higher early expressed support despite this. Weaknesses: Divided support due to being main protagonists from the same game and requiring casual support (weakened due to residual 3H recency bias). Marth also weakening their rallying potential due to some profile overlap. Legendary Chrom being relatively recent and frequently fought in PvP. May both risk losing at the benefit of an outsider if too divided and have higher chances in CYL6. Possible strategy: Ideally choosing early on to support one of the two, but coordination will likely happen and be forced on mid-term standings. Interim Results: Called it, their divided support is leaving room for an outsider (namely Gatekeeper) and Chrom would be benefitting from some extra rally support. But it's unsure whether it'd be enough.
Male Byleth
Status & goal: Outsider, ranking as decently as possible (Top 50 or above) Strengths: Lead of the latest game, no alt at this point (a potential Valentine alt would happen after CYL5 voting anyway), possible vote trickling from CYL4 winners... Weaknesses: ... but those votes may go more toward the much more popular FByleth, or even other popular students (like Ashe). May be a MCorrin-like and settle for Top 50. Possible strategy: Voting for him from day one, maintaining support if within Top 20 if not Top 10 (not so likely), or considering supporting other 3H characters otherwise. Interim Results: Much better than expected, but whether he could maintain that momentum in future editions is very uncertain (could still end up as a slightly higher-ranked MCorrin).
Felix/Ashe
Status & goal: Outsiders, ranking as high as possible (Top 20 being realistic) Strengths: 3H recency bias if maintained from CYL4, Ashe not being released in FEH + Dimitri votes may be beneficial for him, especially with divided challengers. Weaknesses: Felix got a Christmas alt and will lose clutch support that could've granted a win, Ashe doesn't have the same traction. Possible decay in 3H recency bias, but hard to evaluate that. Possible strategy: Supporting from day one, rallying more support on mid-terms if any of them is in a very good position (within Top 10). May still support them otherwise, or other popular 3H characters. Side note on other 3H male students: Sylvain should drop a bit but still remain decently ranked (Top 20-40). Linhardt doesn't have the same rallying potential as Felix/Ashe but may rise noticeably. For Gatekeeper and Dedue, see below since they are odd cases. Interim Results: Felix & Ashe maintained Top 10 presence but are out of contention for Top 2 (not that it's a major issue for their fans). Same goes for Sylvain and Linhardt within Top 20. Yuri did a solid performance by nabbing Top 10, although being tied to a standalone faction may not really change how he'd be released (dedicated faction banner similarly to the Church one... and it might be one of the two New Heroes lineups for this year).
Seliph/Sigurd
Status & goal: Out of contention, not losing too much backing (Top 50 or above) Strengths: Cult following from Genealogy fans, Sigurd was traditionally more popular except when his son benefitted from pity support. Weaknesses: Both got alts in 2020 and may follow Leif's path by losing a decent chunk of their votes (moreso Seliph, Sigurd may not drop as much). Marth would siphon a good part of old-school support. A major fear would be Reinhardt (also out of the picture) ranking higher than all Jugdral lords. Possible strategy: Diehard support until consumed by the blaze. Interim Results: Held their ground better than expected, still out of contention but they avoided Leif's fate at the very least (who's ranked below Reinhardt).
Soren
Status & goal: Out of contention, maintaining solid standings (Top 30 or above) Strengths: Remains solidly ranked over the last 4 editions, not to the extent of Chrom/MRobin but enough to be a potential winning contender in the future... especially if Tellius remakes are next. Weaknesses: Notable competition is still on the table, more likely to make a stronger impact in CYL6/CYL7, and Tellius remakes are quite necessary for that. Possible strategy: Diehard support that can still matter for alts (notably a Legendary variant). Interim Results: Very good performance, that'll help him for future CYL editions.
Gatekeeper
Status & goal: Outsider (?), ranking as high as possible (Top 50 being non-ironically a realistic bar, can even shoot above Top 20 with major support) Strengths: Last minute outsider boasting high appreciation from 3H players and being more than a meme... even if that can grant him an unpredictable amount of votes. The possibility of a playable NPC could be a contributing factor even for a GHB tie-in with the CYL5 lineup if not a win (see Veronica). Clearly the X factor of CYL5. Weaknesses: Being a last minute addition may limit his backing from the casual audience. Unless he ends up within Top 10 or even Top 20 in mid-terms, he's not necessarily a major threat for Top 2. Possible strategy: Meme support starting from day one, may get even more rallying power depending on mid-term standings. Realistic goal being a CYL5 GHB tie-in. Interim Results: So he is a major threat then. Can only get more support at this point, at the expense of Chrom due to his own rallying issues.
Dedue
Status & goal: Out of contention, ranking as high as possible (above Top 50) Strengths: Could benefit from a good part of Dimitri and pity support due to being the only missing retainer. Was #52 overall last year, and since the goal is simply to make him released asap, he only needs a decent amount of raw votes to push him higher within unreleased 3H characters. Weaknesses: Subject to some relative indifference from IS and part of the playerbase, so it's not sure he'd manage to do substantially better. Gatekeeper being votable may hinder his support potential, same goes for already-released and/or more popular characters for release or an alt. Possible strategy: Diehard fans may support him until the end, but he may suffer a bit at mid-terms, especially if another popular 3H male character is within Top 20 and may have a shot to pull off a surprising feat. Interim Results: Much better than expected thanks to pity support working out... but beware, it's a double-edged sword, especially if IS and a good part of the fanbase remains indifferent to him (see Legendary Seliph as a case example)
Female Bracket
Eirika
Status & goal: Favorite, finally being within Top 2 Strengths: Female counterpart to Marth, on top of being the remaining old-school Lord from that side of CYL. Has the fame & pity factor for high potential support, and FByleth may eventually hinder Marianne's backing to secure at least a winning spot. Weaknesses: Voter complacency, on top of FByleth and Marianne's competition with the former being a serious candiate for #1. But proper support and past failures may offset that. Possible strategy: Voting for her from day one in order to have the highest vote amount possible at mid-terms, in case of an upset. Interim Results: Slightly better than expected and risks of being overthrown are slim, but complacency may still put a wrench so her fans are likely maintaining pressure.
Female Byleth
Status & goal: Favorite, getting in Top 2 (if not #1) Strengths: Has the wide popularity & horny factor offsetting her relatively recent alt, can immensely benefit from CYL4 winners' votes (most of Edelgard/Dimitri for pairing reasons, some of Claude and a bit of Lysithea). Weaknesses: If she's close to Eirika in raw votes at mid-terms, that could spur some rallying in favor of the latter, similarly to Micaiah vs Camilla in CYL3. Other than that though... Possible strategy: Voting for her from day one in order to have the highest vote amount possible at mid-terms, which may completely secure a win no matter what similarly to CYL4. Interim Results: On par with predictions, seems like vote dilution weakened a bit her rallying potential due to all the popular 3H females. But she still has an edge for winning spots.
Marianne
Status & goal: Runner-up, potentially getting in Top 2 (maybe with FByleth) Strengths: Very popular, still unreleased in FEH and could pull off Lysithea's performance. A good part of Claude and Lysithea votes from CYL4 could be enough in terms of raw numbers to push her in Top 2. If FByleth is #1 at mid-terms and Eirika is #2, supporters of the former may flock toward Marianne. Weaknesses: FByleth herself. Both'd each need a huge amount of extra votes... which is possible, but not certain. Moreover, and we could see that in the Harmony vs Changing Winds poll, it's totally possible that FByleth siphons a huge amount of CYL4 votes, leaving fewer for other characters and not being enough for Marianne. Possible strategy: Voting for her from day one in order to have the highest vote amount possible at mid-terms, which can eventually help her to gather more support. Interim Results: On par with pragmatic reserves, overthrowing Byleth AND Eirika will be very tough due to support dilution (Bernadetta, Hilda, Dorothea...).
FEH OCs
Status & goal: Out of contention, ranking as high as possible (variable) Strengths: Unpredictable and non-negligible outsiders, as we could see with Lif and Plumeria. Female OCs tend to do very well, so Reginn could settle for a decent place within Top 40... but Henriette may actually be higher and be a Plumeria-lite if MILF motivations were to matter (Top 20-30 wouldn't be too shocking). The fact that votes may be more reflective of FEH players may contribute to OCs. Weaknesses: Unpredictable by nature and atm, remaining competition makes a brand-new OC win unlikely. Possible strategy: Support mostly coming from FEH players, hard to tell how it'd go but Henriette is the one to potentially watch out after, especially if appearing on mid-term standings. Side note on other male OCs: Doubtful that Fafnir and Otr would do well (can still end within Top 50-100), same goes for Freyr who already had middling standings. Gustav could actually do relatively better than them now that he's votable (Top 30-50). Interim Results: Henriette did very well and is indeed a Plumeria-lite by almost getting into Top 10 (not unreachable). Plumeria still holds well all things considered, while all Book V OCs are nowhere to be seen.
Bernadetta/Dorothea/Hilda/Ingrid/Rhea
Status & goal: Out of contention, ranking as high as possible (Top 20-40 or above) Strengths: Still very popular 3H characters who may retain most of their backing despite recent releases. Weaknesses: First 3 have recentish alts, so their winning odds are near zero. In Rhea's case, she doesn't seem to have high traction potential. Possible strategy: Diehard support that may go to potential winners depending on mid-term standings. Side note on other female students: Most of them are expected to be released (be it in their pre-TS forms or as alts), and the lesser popular ones (Leonie). Interim Results: Bernadetta, Dorothea, Hilda, Ingrid and Rhea all did well by being within Top 20. No winning odds, but still a solid result nonetheless for their fans.
Female Corrin/Female Robin/Tharja/Azura
Status & goal: Out of contention, ranking as high as possible (Top 20-40 or above) Strengths: Similar to the above 3H cases, they are still popular so at best they can still remain high in CYL rankings, even if they aren't going to win. That can still matter for alts. Weaknesses: FCorrin had her Legendary alt recently, FRobin doesn't have the same traction as her male counterpart (plus a Halloween Grima alt for what it's worth), Tharja just got an alt to cut any emergent traction. Overall, those characters lost some traction and may not fully recover or improve it for now. Possible strategy: Diehard support until the end, but may be split depending on mid-terms. Side note on Anna/Jill: They're also out of contention but unlike the above cases, their winning odds in the future are less certain. Interim Results: Same as above, no winning odds but still within Top 10 which is very good. Anna and Jill seemingly dropped below Top 20. If I made mistakes, feel free to correct me. [Edit: Layout was a bit messed up, corrected that quickly.)

Seeking a merger in "gaming and gaming technology, branded consumer, lodging and entertainment, and Internet commerce sectors". I think this is highly worth a play on the online gambling hype if you can get in at near NAV, based entirely on the management which is unbeatable in its knowledge of the gambling industry
CEO Jason Ader has held director level positions at Las Vegas Sands Corp. ($42bn one of biggest casino groups in world), IGT (£3.72bn multinational gambling firm specialised in software and slot machines) and Playtech (£1.4bn multinational gambling software firm) Before starting his own fund in 2013 he was regularly ranked Wall Street's top analyst on the gambling and leisure sector His fund, Spring Owl Capital, is a small activist fund focused on gambling and leisure. They are probably most famous for ousting the CEO of Viacom in 2016 and a crusade against Yahoo CEO Marissa Meyer in 2015. Ader knows the gambling - and online gambling - industry inside out. He drove bWin to a £1.1bn takeover by gambling giant GVC (now Entain) in 2016, and has been driving similar change and demands for improvement at board level at Playtech The fund mostly manages money for a select group of wealthy families, which could be a positive sign for the SPAC (although I don't know how much skin in the SPAC the fund has, if any) Here is a video of Ader from November talking about how he's excited about SPACs. He talks about how he has been advising certain States about legalising sports betting and how to maximise value and liquidity by linking up with European companies in the space (Playtech e.g.??). Greg Lyss This is a very interesting but extremely low profile person. He was Bill Ackman a.k.a SPACman's right hand man at Gotham Capital. Ackman respected him so much that when Ackman set up a personal hedge fund to invest the Ackman family's money, he put Lyss in charge of it. To repeat - Bill Ackman thinks this guy is such a good investor and trustworthy that he put him in charge of investing his family's money. Don't know anything more about him, but I like this association with Ackman, which suggests to me some integrity around management of this SPAC, especially as the gambling world can be very murky. The other member of the team is the CFO of SpringOwl with 20+ years' hedge fund experience and not notable (although clearly competent)
Thesis / potential targets Based on the above experience and many public comments by Ader over the past year, I would be very surprised if ADER is not looking to merge with an online gambling technology provider / existing online betting website / social casino app / possibly a supporting technology provider They are activist inventors, and specifically say in the IPO prospectus that they could look for businesses that can benefit from turnaround or are not being run well. I speculate that their deep knowledge of the European / global online gambling industry means they have a target in mind that they think would benefit from their expertise and US liberalisation of gambling legislation.
1) Ader believes the listing of UK-listed gambling companies in US is immediately big in terms of market cap because of the premium on online gambling stocks in US. He has pitched DraftKings to takeover Playtech and called on Playtech to spin off non-core business. This makes me wonder if he would spin off some element of Playtech to list in US to cash in on gambling hype. This might be Finalto.com / TradeTech which is an online financial platform owned by Playtech. Playtech has been trying to sell this for 200 - 240m since August so it fits. This company provides liquidity and trading to brokerages and runs markets.com a trading site. I wouldn't be that excited although apparently the business has been booming during COVID and there could be a decent pop just on fintech hype.
2) This could be a 'picks and shovel' type data/B2B betting software play a la DMYD, or something like e.g. Israel based CRM software Optimove which works with some of biggest online gambling cos and has links to Ashkenazi. This would be interesting but probably not a huge pop
3) Possibly - given Ader's links to Sands - an online gambling tie-up with one of the big Vegas casinos who are desperate to get into the online betting space (see MGM's attempt to buy Entain for $8bn last week). Interestingly, Sands' owner Sheldon Adelson, previously a major opponent of online betting, has just died. Ader predicted a few months ago that Sands would be moving in this direction.

Monday 8/10/2020 to Thursday 8/13/2020 I won't do the play by play. It's more fun to just amalgamate the highlight reel of the week. I get call after call from people looking for 380 and 9mm ammo. One notable dialogue at 8PM 1: You have any 380 ammo? Me: Yes, I have 7 boxes yet 1: How much? Me: 20 to a box, 50 each 1: Great we can come pick it up now! Me: It's 8PM and I've already left for the day. Come in tomorrow 1: But we need it now. Me: I'm not heading back to work to sell a box of ammo. 1: Oh come on! I called you! You should be able to help me! Me: I am, during normal business hours. But if you really want 2 boxes - $100 bill and I'll head back in. 1: ONE HUNDRED DOLLARS? YOU JUST TOLD ME IT WAS TWENTY! Me: Twenty to a box, 50 bucks each box times two boxes 1: That's highway robbery! That's price gouging! Me: Go look online. Nobody has any 380 ammo. And if they do it is $1 or $2 per round. 1: That's ridiculous! You're not the only guy in town that has 380 ammo! (Editors note: She calls back the next day asking for 380 ammo. Apparently I am the only guy in town that has 380 ammo. I tell her there's a new policy. No ammo sales to people who have not bought firearms.) One of my surgeon customers calls me telling me his lead nurse who hates guns wants to buy a gun. I tell them to come on down. Her whole family and the doc come in and I have this dialogue. 1: Can you suggest a gun for someone who hates guns? Me: That's like a vegan walking into a steakhouse and saying "whats a good steak for a vegan?" - there's no real good way to do it and everything I can suggest you is sold out and then some. 1: Well what do you have here? Me: That's a Glock 17, here take a look. (Unload and show clear, hand her a Glock 17) 1: OH MY GOD THIS IS SO HEAVY! Me: That's one of the lightest full size firearms ever made. 1: Do you have something with a safety? I love safeties. The more the better. If you have a gun with 150 safetys, that's something I would be interested in. (I glare at the doc) Me: I've only got three or four different model pistols left in stock. Me: You mean the grip safety? 1: yes 1: What happened to "I love safties the more the better" (Doc nearly inhales his surgical mask from laughing) She hates guns and wants to go rent a bunch of guns before buying any guns but I explain the problem is you can go rent something, fall in love with it and the dealer can't get one for a year. Case in point: Glock 19's, Sig 365's and Springfield Hellcats. She believes she is not ready to buy a gun until she rents one. I tell her go to a range and go rent one and find out what she likes. She has just taken a "safety course" offered by the local girl and a gun chapter. The local girl and a gun chapter is run by a middle aged woman who has NRA instructor creds that is the WORST FIREARM INSTRUCTOR I HAVE EVER MET IN MY LIFE with the possible exception of James Yaeger. The last time I was at one of her events she was using the "mugger in a hoodie" paper targets and she instructed all the women to shoot him in the balls during one course of fire. Now, I wasn't wearing my Caltech shirt that day but the fast math and trig is as follows. Person shooting at a target 10 feet from the bench at a downward angle with a backstop of dirt 50 feet behind the bench... I was trying to fix someone's gun before I could do anything. I am concentrated on fixing this pistol and the first volley of gunfire breaks my concentration. I then hear the sound of dozens of 9mm projectiles hitting the concrete and skipping off the property. I drop the pistol and shout at the top of my lungs a cease fire and evetyone looks at me funny Me: KAREN! WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOING? 1: Oh they're just girls, let them have their fun! Me: ALL THE BULLETS ARE LEAVING THE PROPERTY! 1: What? No! How? (I point at all the ricochet gouges on the concrete of the gun club) 1: Ohhhhhh This woman is barely qualified to run a dairy queen much less instruct neophyte gun owners. Holy fucking shit. Why are people going to her? She's open, and she's a woman that has credentials that "can teach". Yeah. One day I head to lunch at the local pizza joint for lunch with Megan. Eddie makes a nice pizza and I sit down and have a pie. We rap about business as I eat my antipasato and wait for my freshly prepared clam pie to cool down a bit. It's not on the menu but he makes it special for us. Me: hey eddie how's business? ed: It's steady, lots of takeout. Me: Its a tough economy I'd take it! ed: Hey now! Me: You doing okay? ed: yeah I found that derringer I wanted at the last gun show! Me: Oh really? ed: Yeah! Someone ceracoted it tiffany blue and magenta Me: Whoa whoa whoa! Please! I'm trying to eat here! Disgusting! (Megan is drinking water and nearly does a spit take) This is the world we're living in now. Speaking of the new world... I wind up working a deal with a friend and we split 100k pcs of once fired lake city 5.56 brass. A local military contractor was doing some testing and they had a fucking ton of it and this is what was left. We got it for the cost of manpower to scrape it up and load it, clean it, tumble it and sort it and deprime and resize it. My friend has two kids that are doing online learning with school, so he made them a deal. He cut the kiddos a deal to help him clean and resize and deprime the brass as labor. We're into this stuff CHEAP. So we can sell it cheap or whatever the fuck we want in this market. I tell Ray I've got the perfect ad. We get some projectiles, some powder and primers and we run an ad. "5.56 ammo! $275/thousand! Some assembly required!" and Ray laughs his ass off. The we got it was it was loaded into some wooden ammo crates that were left over at the contractors facility. They're heavy, not cost effective to ship and came with 5000 pcs of brass each. Ray gets an idea. He has discovered that if we portion it out and throw out or sell the wooden crates, we save a ton of money on shipping. His kids did the legwork in the loading on account of my bad back and I'm tasked with lining up buyers. No problem. I start working the local gun boards, my customers, myspace, etc. You know the usual spots. This is where the wheels come off the wagon. I get a guy who comes right out the gate asking for 9k and then he blurts out "How much do you have, I'm interested in all of it" Little hint for the readers. Anyone that says they're interested in everything you have are interested in nothing you have. They're blowing smoke 99% of the time and the 1% of the time that someone does buy everything you have, you're making a killing off them or they're making a killing off you. You know the old saying in poker - if you sit down at the table and you can't find the sucker in 5 minutes, you're the sucker? It's like that. Anyhow, my ad reads as follows: $125/thousand 5.56 Brass Lake City cleaned, sorted, resized, trimmed and polished - DILLON 1050 READY! The guy calling me wanting 9k then asked how much I had left - he lines up 9 of his friends and they want to take ALL of it and divvy it up. Pick up today or when the guys can get off of work and come get it, they're working back asswards logistics as to who's truck is going to haul all of it, who's loading it and unloading and they plan to show up at 630 tonight after work to come get it. At 445 I get a message - hey can you send me a picture again one of my friends wants to check something and I send it over. And that's when the entire deal falls apart because this butthead read 5.56 brass lake city NATO headstamp $125/thousand and thought he was getting loaded 5.56 NATO spec ammo for 12.5 cents a round in 2020, told all his friends about it and shot his mouth off like a damn fool. Now he has to explain to every single one of his friends that no you're not getting 10,000 rds of 5.56 NATO ammo for $1250. Wasting my fucking time. That was my Thursday. All these people begging for ammo are driving me nuts. Yes, I have 250,000 rds of ammo. No I am not going to bend over backwards and sell it to you cheap just to be a nice person/earn your business/because your sister gave me a handjob in high school. God damn. Lady calls me looking for 380 ammo. She needs some for her CCW class that Karen is teaching and I tell her I have some left. She comes in and I tell her it's $50 a box. She leaves without buying anything. There's other miscellany but you get the gist of it. NOW here's the meat and potatoes you've wanted! The tale of the gun show! Friday 8/14/2020 I take inventory. I'm down to about 500 guns in stock and I pack as much as I can and get it ready for the show. I've got some Sigs left, a handful of Glock and a mishmash of everything else. I head to bed early knowing full well the next show will be a total shitshow. I have not done a show in a big city for nearly six months. This will be epic or epic fail. Saturday 8/15/2020 I pull chocks at 430AM, hit the flying J for diesel and pull into the local grocery store for a sandwich at 7AM right around the corner from the gun show. They fuck up my sandwich. Serves me right for buying morning of. Fuck me to tears. I start loading into the show and the entire front of the building is set up with crowd control barriers and it takes me an extra 40 minutes to thread the needle of my hand truck and loadout. I get the table setup as fast as I can and by 9AM the doors are open and we are off to the races. I will do hour blocks instead of my previous play by play for simplicity. 9AM: Right out the gate I have people asking me for Sig 365's. I have a used one with three mags and a holster I have tagged at $650. The guy asks me if I can do any better. I ask him if he's feeling lucky. I run the 4473 bet with him. He fills out the form straight on the first shot, no corrections - and he gives me $650, he gets $50 back with his ID. If there's a correction to be made, I keep half a yard. He says its a bet. He loses. As I write that up at $650, I have another guy snag a regular 365 for $700. Both their background checks clear quickly. The morning is not off to a bad start, I think to myself. I'm about to be proven wrong massively. One of my old friends from high school asked me to liquidate some of his collection and I told him that I would selectively cherry pick some stuff and haul it to the show since I didn't want to commit large amounts of table space for other people's guns. He's got a super clean Century M70 underfolder. It's clean even by century standards but I don't want to buy that gun. It's fucking useless when technology fails AND YOU HAVE NO BACKUP. She transfers money from wells fargo to her boyfriends account at chase and he tries to use the ATM to get her cash. No dice. I swear to jebus, if you take debit cards away from this generation all of them will starve to death and die alone. Gun number 30 for the weekend is hard fought but it's done. 11AM: Crank off a Sig 1911 for a guy. He sends a stand in to pick it up for him since his son is exempt from waiting period but he isn't. I really wanted to pull that stunt. 11AM: Lady comes in to pick up a layway and she can't fill out the 4473 and wear a mask at the same time. She also cannot stop talking. Local restaurant owner that I sold a Sig 227 to a few months ago wants me to put in an SRT kit. He's disassembled the entire frame and wants me to put it togther. I explain that an SRT install is normally 5 minutes. This is easily a 45 minute job to reassemble and that's IF he has all the parts. He says he has all the parts. I begin putting the gun back together. He does not have all the parts. He goes home and says he will look harder for the missing part. 3PM: I look online for the missing part. It's $5 and 4 weeks to ship and in stock at most vendors. This sucks. I call some favors and I know of one in the mid atlantic area I can get here in a week in case he can't find it. As I get off the phone he walks in with the missing part. Just an FYI for the readers. In ten years, I have had "bag o gun" come through the door on three previous occasions. First: Sig 229 from local PD. Chief took it apart, couldn't put it back together. Had no backup gun and had to go on duty in a few hours, I was asked to put it together. Second: My buddy Bruce in PA. He detail stripped his 220 and got it wrong. I put it back together and sent it back to PA. Third: Rusty and his 226. See above. He missed some parts. I put it back together and sent it back to Texas. If anyone thinks they see a pattern here it's because there IS a pattern here. I start work on the 227 and this thing is a bitch and a half. The ejector, which is a 25 cent stamped metal part is not to spec. Sig's QC sucks. Their 3mm hole PRECISELY stamped in one place isn't 3mm and isn't precise. The sear pin that has to go through the left side of the frame, through the ejector, through the left side of the sear, through the sear reset spring, through the other side of the sear, through the safety lever and through the right side of the frame is NOT COOOPERATING because the ejector is too tight. I have to beat on this thing with a drilling hammer to get it to go. 45 minutes of anger and frustration later, 227 is back in action with the garbage one piece E2 grips. For this pain, I bill $100. He tells me he should have had me do it in the first place. I say he's right but it's a tough job doing Sig classic pistols right. They're a very challenging platform. 4PM: I ship off some more 5.56 brass and pay my buddy Ray. I head home. 5PM: Beef jerky time. I hope you all enjoyed these stories.
