Let’s talk about: Tranquility Moon Base Hotel and Casino by the Arctic Monkeys
So it’s been about 3 years give or take since the release of the last Arctic Monkeys album. The follow up to their biggest, most popular album, AM. Which gave them the coveted arena rock audience in America most bands in the UK dream of. On the heels of that success they decided to, presumably flush with cash and notoriety, record their weirdest LP yet. A lounge rock “concept” album that took place loosely on an outer space casino. It was decidedly un-AM, in almost every way. And it quite divisive upon release to fans and a few critics. However since then I’ve seen plenty of people online say some variation of, ”I hated it when it first came out. But after a year or so, when I came back to it again, I fell in love! Now it’s my favorite album from the band.” I am not one of those people. I disliked it when it first came out and though I can appreciate its ambition and instrumentals, I still think it’s hot dookie. AM was the band throwing their hat in the ring rockstar ring unabashedly. It was their attempt at writing a rock album that was both accessible and interesting. It’s my favorite record of theirs because it, to quote Alex himself, mixes Black Sabbath with Aaliyah. It’s full of hooks, harmony, and swagger. But at its core is an album filled with impeccable songwriting. The best and most consistent in the Monkey’s discography. To me, Tranquility is the mutant stepchild of AM. It’s rock and roll excess stripped of the rock and the songwriting. It’s filled with interesting ideas that never seem to land. And by interesting ideas I mean musically. Because on the whole I was thoroughly unimpressed with Turner’s lyrics. To hard-core fans Turner is a god among men. But to me I’ve never particularly heard anything that justified the hype. Is he bad at it? Absolutely not. He’s average. With a few good ones thrown in here and there. The lyrics are a vehicle to express the melody he wants to convey in the song, , but the actual substance of them never stays with me. And even if they were particularly interesting in the past they certainly weren’t anything interesting on this record. People hyped it up as if a famous musician that made it big talking about the nature of fame was something revolutionary. Countless artists before him have done it and done it better in my opinion. People hyped up his lyrics about the nature of technology and change in society as if it was some fresh topic. But it’s not. For chrissakes you had Greek philosophers 4000 years ago talking about how society was moving too fast for its good. I hear that at my job at least once a month from secretaries. It’s not necessarily some revolutionary topic for any person let alone a rockstar to cover. And Alex doesn’t even do it that well in the first place. Most of them come across as vague unconnected thought bubbles that never actually contribute to an overarching narrative, character, or theme. I feel like if people didn’t have the background knowledge that this was a “concept album“ and nobody would even give the lyrics the credit they’ve gotten so far. It’s only with that knowledge that I can sort of squint and see between the lines at what I imagine Alex is trying to tell me. But what he’s saying his pretty damn boring. And do not even get me started on the comical, almost cringe worthy style of singing he’s taking up. I know people are gonna say he’s doing it on purpose to be a character. But yikes....that man has to learn how to sing in his range again because I was laughing out loud when I first heard the album and I still laugh when I heard it last night. It’s just bad. The elegant streams of melodies in songs like Do I Wanna Know or Cornerstone have been replaced by garbled, jigsaws croaked or warbled out in an overacted voice. But that’s all just my opinion. Everything I listed as a flaw another person could see as a positive. And that’s great! I’m glad people enjoy any piece of art. But I hope the next album features some tighter songwriting. TLDR: Tranquility is an apt name cause it put me to sleep.
It's just after midnight in Sin City, Las Vegas. In the seediest part of town, you find a tiny casino that catches your eye. A buzzing neon sign spells the name, "FULL MOON CASINO", complete with an image of a full moon. Inside, the musty air of cigarettes and cheap but strong alcohol makes your eyes wince. Another one, a female wolf, seems more courteous and invites you to sit down next to her. A third wolf, another male, also wants you to sit by him, but he doesn't seem nearly as kind somehow. The two others, a male and female, seem too plastered to care.
