Preview
Three games into the 2014/15 SkyBet Championship finds two pre-season promotion contenders much lower in the table than they would've hoped. Last season's flamboyant top goalscorers Derby County have so far struggled to recapture some of last season's magic, and fans will soon begin to worry should the wait for a convincing league victory go on.
On Saturday, they host relegated Premier League mainstays Fulham who had hoped for a quick return to the top flight. However, Felix Magath's men have so far failed to notch a single point, losing their opening three fixtures by a single goal on each occasion.
Despite spending huge money on proven goalscorer Ross McCormack, Fulham have so far found the net on just one occasion, with their only goal coming from defender Tim Hoogland. Fans will then surely worry about the proposition of travelling to Derby to face a side who have kept two clean sheets in their opening three fixtures.
Indeed, previous to their midweek game against Charlton, it was a sturdy defence that described the Rams' opening to the season - far from the swashbuckling antics throughout the back half of the last campaign. Although they have showed glimpses of their hidden quality, the home crowd will hope for a convincing victory full of flair and pace to lift spirits.
Unfortunately for fans of both sides, history suggests that a draw may be the likely result with the last four contests between Derby and the Cottagers resulting in a draw after 90 minutes, including two during Derby's most recent run in the Premier League.
Steve McClaren's Derby enter the game as favourites, however that tag may be beginning to weigh heavily on some of the younger player's in his squad, with the likes of Will Hughes perhaps dropping to the bench in favour of the more experienced John Eustace, or more cultured Omar Mascarell, after having an unconvincing start to the season in front of the back four.
A win for both sides could be vital in restarting their season and begin the charge up the table, with sights set on the coveted automatic promotion spots and a return to the Barclays Premier League. Whilst failure may signal a wake up call to the reality that the SkyBet Championship may be the most competitive league in the world, and one not easily escaped.
Team News
Derby County
  • One or two changes must surely be made to the Rams' starting 11, after picking up just one point from their last two games
  • Recalls to the starting line-up possible for Johnny Russell, Leon Best and John Eustace
  • No fresh injury concerns for Steve McClaren leaves him with a wealth of options in attack and midfield
Fulham
  • Felix Magath made five changes ahead of the Cottager's last game against Wolves, however the result remained the same. More changes can be expected as he struggles to find his best 11
  • The few guarenteed starters include big money man Ross McCormack, captain Scott Parker and goalkeeper Jesse Joronen
  • Three different formations have been used in Fulham's opening three games, however it is likely that a line up will be selected in order to suppress Derby's width

  • 34 min - Fulham starting to get on the ball more, with a few corners building up
  • 37 min - Ross McCormack spots Grant off his line and tries and audacious long range effort, dealt with by Grant but Fulham's best effort so far
  • 41 min - Complete switch in momentum now as Fulham have had much of the play for the last 10 minutes
  • 41 min - Derby counter up the pitch and earn a pair of corners, relieving some pressure in the process
  • 45 min (+1) - A foul on Russell by Kavanagh earns Derby a free kick in their own half which should be the last kick of the first half
HALF TIME
Ross McCormack and Scott Parker the two stand outs for Fulham for me, with McCormack often going deep to get involved. We looked a lot stronger for the majority of the half, but Fulham finished the stronger and Derby will hope to start the second as they began the first. As for the Rams, John Eustace has provided a good stable base to build from, and is staking his place well to start reguarly.
KICK OFF
  • 50 min - An interestingly worked free kick for Derby results in a good ball in by Jamie Ward which is headed over by Keogh
  • 52 min - Eustace intercepts in the middle and feeds the ball to Johnny Russell who blazes over the bar, Derby looking bright though
  • 53 min - GOAL FULHAM! Scott Parker
  • 53 min - A free kick smashed straight into the wall eventually finds its way to Scott Parker who slots a placed shot inside the post and into the Derby County net
  • 55 min - A great worked move by Derby County ends with a great ball across the box by Jeff Hendrick, and Chris Martin skies the ball over an empty net!
  • 57 min - Derby really in the ascendancy after conceding, looking much the more likely to take the lead again
  • 59 min - GOAL DERBY! Craig Bryson
  • 59 min - Another fluid move by the Rams going forward is met by a neat cushioned volley by Craig Bryson from close range
  • 60 min - Substitute Fulham Stafylidis Off Kacaniklic On
  • 61 min - GOAL DERBY! Chris Martin
  • 61 min - It's all going on now! Real end to end stuff as Chris Martin finds some space in the box and slots the ball into the corner of the net
  • 66 min - Substitute Fulham Hoogland Off Voser On
  • 68 min - The game has calmed down somewhat after a frantic 10 minutes following the Fulham goal, and Ross McCormack has gone down with a head injury
  • 72 min - Attendance is 26, 577
  • 76 min - Still no substitutes for Derby, I'd like to see one or two fresh legs on to secure the 3 points
  • 76 min - Jamie Ward has been fantastic today, and puts another good ball into the box
  • 80 min - Final Sub for Fulham Roberts Off Eisfeld On
  • 81 min - The link-up play for Fulham just doesn't seem to be quite there today, with one-twos not finding their mark by small margins
  • 82 min - Substitute Derby Russell Off Dawkins On
  • 83 min - Substitute Derby Bryson Off Hughes On
  • 87 min - GOAL DERBY! Chris Martin
  • 87 min - The two substitutes combine as Hughes frees Simon Dawkins who hits the post with the rebound falling kindly for Chris Martin
  • 88 min - GOAL DERBY! Simon Dawkins
  • 88 min - Hughes AGAIN frees Simon Dawkins who this time slots home
  • 90 min - Final Sub for Derby Ward Off Best On
  • 90 min (+1) - It's Olé time now for Derby, who are happy to see out their first big win of the season!
FULL TIME
It's a fourth straight defeat for Fulham, and Derby finally notch up a string of goals and claim their first emphatic win of the season.

Preview
The international break has come and gone and after two weeks of waiting the first East Midlands derby of the season between Derby County and Nottingham Forest is almost upon us. It could not come at a more appropriate time, as the Brian Clough trophy will be contested at the City Ground just days before the 10 year anniversary of the legendary outspoken manager's death.
Last term both fixtures resulted in the losing club firing their respective managers in Nigel Clough and Billy Davies, but both Steve McClaren and Stuart Pearce will surely keep their positions this time round - along with the pride and 3 points should their sides be victorious Sunday afternoon.
The two last met back in March when Derby thumped an injury hit Forest side 5-0 in front of a rapturous home crowd to mark a historic win as the Rams marched into the play-offs. However, the reverse fixture last year would spell the end for Nigel Clough as the Rams slumped to a 1-0 defeat at the City Ground - their only loss against Forest in the last 5 meetings.
Forest come into the game full of confidence as they are undefeated so far this season, winning 6 of their opening 7 games in the process. New signings Britt Assombalonga and Michail Antonio have hit the ground running, both with 4 goals in all competitions already, and new manager Stuart Pearce has galvanized a side that felt lost at times last season. Indeed, Forest enter the fixture as slight favourites despite being embarrassed 5-0 just months ago.
Craig Bryson, who netted a historic hat-trick in the last meeting between the Rams and the Reds, has yet to hit the heights of last season but will surely be a key player if Derby are to take three points away from the City Ground. With Jeff Hendrick injured, Bryson will most likely be partnered by young star Will Hughes and will look to make plenty of runs into the box, the likes of which saw him net regularly last campaign.
Derby have had a relatively mediocre start to the season given the high expectations placed on themselves by the fans and management, but if there is a time to rediscover some of last year's form it is at the trip to Nottingham tomorrow afternoon. No team talk required for both sets of players, they should know what this fixture means to all involve, and more importantly, with both teams pushing for promotion this term - 3 points would be huge for either side.
A win for Forest would cement their place atop the SkyBet Championship table, giving them bragging rights and the Brian Clough trophy for the ten year anniversary of his passing. While, a win for Derby could catapult them into the play-off positions, and give their momentum a shot in the arm along with the pleasure of inflicting Forest's first defeat of the season.
Drama is guaranteed, the atmosphere will be electric, and the tribute by both sets of fans on the 10 minute mark for the late great Brian Clough will be emotional. Even the day before, this one is far too close to call.

  • Date: 15/09/2015
  • Venue: The Madejski Stadium
  • Kick-off: 20:00 GMT
Previous Fixtures
Preston 1 - 2 Derby
Reading 5 - 1 Ipswich
Pre-Match Facts
  • Thorne is out of contention, and Bryson is unlikely to feature
  • Captain Chris Baird is out through concussion
  • Will Hughes remains out for a very long time
  • Derby finally recorded their first win of the season at the weekend
  • Reading remain at home coming off a huge 5 - 1 win over Ipswich
  • One to watch: Oliver Norwood. A very complete midfielder at this level will look to take control of the game, must be kept off the ball.
Pazzyboi's Preview: Now we finally have a win under our belt, we need to press on and show it isn't an isolated result. It'll be tough facing a Reading side who will be high on confidence after an amazing result on Friday, and rotation may be our key to winning the game.
Our squad is deeper than any in the league as far as I am concerned, even with 3 injuries, and we should use it to our advantage when the games come thick and fast.
The starting lineup I would play is:
Carson Christie Shackell Pearce Forsyth Hanson Hendrick Butterfield Ince Weimann Martin
As far as I'm concerned only Martin and Shackell are undroppable, with maybe Ince due to what he CAN do. It pains me to leave Keogh and Russell out, but Pearce has had little time and Weimann needs to prove himself too.
Christie needs to keep his place and I'd rather start Forsyth over Warnock, and Hendrick looked good coming off the bench at the weekend. I'd also put Carson back in goal, but I really wish we'd have some consistency in that position.
I think this is likely to be a tough game, especially in the first half, but one we should be looking to win. I think if we use our strength in depth and rotate a little we will be able to pile pressure on in the second half and grab a late winner. 2-1 again.

[Pre Match] Derby County v Burnley

Match Information - Derby County v Burnley
SkyBet Championship 2015/16
  • Date: 21/09/2015
  • Venue: The iPro Stadium
  • Kick-off: 19:45 GMT
Previous Fixtures
Reading 0 - 1 Derby
Burnley 2 - 1 MK Dons
Pre-Match Facts
  • Thorne may be in line for a return to the match squad, Bryson and Baird are also doubts
  • Will Hughes remains out for a very long time
  • Derby have recorded back to back wins, whilst Burnley have won their last 4 in a row
  • A win would put Derby back in and around where they want to be, but Burnley are also challenging for the top positions
  • One to watch: Michael Keane. An unorthodox pick, but the 22 year old defender was rated highly at Manchester United and he has been great for Burnley so far this season, even netting 3 goals!
Pazzyboi's Preview: The arrival of Butterfield and Johnson has replenished our midfield and brought results with it. I don't think this is a huge surprise as they provide qualities we've missed sorely in our opening fixtures.
Burnley represent another tough outing for us, but one I fully believe we can win - especially at home. We have to be at our best, and dealing with Vokes and Gray up top will be vital.
The starting lineup I would play is:
Carson Christie Shackell Keogh Forsyth Thorne Hendrick Johnson Ince Russell Martin
I've gone for Hendrick and Johnson over Butterfield, because I think we'll need power in that engine room against Burnley, and players that can do their bit defensively as well as going forward. If Thorne isn't ready then Johnson moves back and Butterfield comes in.
We have so many good options in midfield that it really is a nightmare to pick, but those are the type of problems I want to have as a fan. However, Johnny Russell and Chris Martin pick themselves on current form.
I really like the look of the back four and think it should be our regular back four, but it certainly won't be with Warnock and Baird around. Keogh and Shackell have formed a great partnership so far and it seems like Clement is keen on keeping it going for good reason.
I want to see us play sensibly but have confidence to take the game to Burnley at home. I would like to see us lay down a marker for our promotion rivals, but it is always going to be tough. Predicting a tight, high scoring affair with the Rams edging it 3-2

[Pre Match] Derby County v Charlton Athletic

Match Information - Derby County v Charlton Athletic
SkyBet Championship 2015/16
  • Date: 15/08/2015
  • Venue: The iPro Stadium, Derby
  • Kick-off: 15:00 GMT
Previous Fixtures
Portsmouth 2 - 1 Derby
Charlton 4 - 1 Dag & Red
Pre-Match Facts
  • Will Hughes and Craig Bryson remain injured
  • Two poor performances to start the season, massive improvement needed here
  • Interestingly we face Charlton coming off a big win against Dagenham & Redbridge at Home, just like our last opponents Portsmouth
  • Charlton won their opening fixture convincingly 2-0 at home to QPR
  • Darren Bent, Simon Dawkins, and Lee Grant are three that under-performed midweek, and are unlikely to keep their places
  • One to watch: Tony Watt. The young striker, formerly of Celtic, famously scored against Barcelona in the Champions League. Still only 21, he already has 2 goals to his name this season. He didn't start the season's opener, but after his performances he may well start this one.
Pazzyboi's Preview: An improved performance is direly needed as our season has really yet to begin. Thankfully our defeat didn't come in the competition that should be our primary focus, the SkyBet Championship, but it has to be the wake up call we need.
Charlton have won both of their fixtures thus far, including a convincing home win over relegated QPR. However, I feel that the home advantage, and it being our first home game of the season, should give us an edge we desperately need.
As far as I'm concerned, until mistakes are made, Scott Carson should now be our first choice goalkeeper. Midweek also showed how much we miss Hughes and Bryson, and I really hope we bring one more face into the club in that area. Hendrick and Baird failed to control the midfield without Thorne, and it really showed when the latter came onto the pitch.
The starting lineup I would play is:
Carson Baird Shackell Keogh Forsyth Thorne Hendrick Ince Weimann Russell Martin
It is a tough one to figure out at the moment. Normally I'd go for a 4-3-3, but I think midweek showed me that a Hendrick and Baird midfield isn't the answer. As a result Sswankambo, who I thought did well against Pompey, misses out.
I want to see Weimann given a chance in the number 10 slot as I think he can really make a big impact there, with Ince good running at people out wide and cutting inside.
I'm going to predict a narrow 2-1 win, with us maybe not deserving it. A scrappy win which can help get the season moving
