I know in my heart gambling has done nothing but rip me to shreds mentally and ruin a good chunk of my life, but some how quitting has a stronger feeling than losing a long term friend or disappointing a loved one. Between 19-22 I have lost over $240,000 and counting. My entire life I have been stingy about cash and never spent a nickel on anything for myself, until I found gambling. Prior to gambling I was a happy, self made 19 year old working from home as a live streamer with a large platform I built for myself making more money than 90% of people my age with a hefty savings to show for it, had a girlfriend that I loved to death and wanted to make a real life with. My first real taste of poker came in grade 10. I was maybe fifteen, sixteen at the time, and we organized a five card draw game during second period spare. Eventually we got busted by the teachers. Actually I played a rather effective loose aggro style at the time. Well I would switch gears, a bit looser early on, some bluffs, and then straight value towards the end of the night. Really we didn't know anything, but we the great thing about poker is you only have to be slightly better than your opponents. There was a raked 1/2 game in my town, the Rounders Club or something they called themselves, that I cut my eyeteeth on. Then casino trips. I remember sitting down at a 5/10 limit hold'em game. This was so long ago people actually played limit hold'em. One day there was a tournament in town, someone had rented a warehouse and set up a tournament. The Gambler's Fallacy - My Story of Gambling Away Harvard Med School & Promising Start-Up
Hey guys, Longtime lurker here, but created a new account to post regularly. My goal is to keep myself accountable and hopefully encourage others. Early-Life: I grew up in an incredible family. My parents loved us well and provided everything we needed while making us work enough to avoid entitlement. I remember being very happy as a kid. We also had 9 cousins who all lived within 2-3 streets of our house. It was through these cousins that I was first exposed to gambling. Our parents all enjoyed gambling and did so responsibly, so we started playing $1 Texas Hold 'Em games once every few months with all the cousins. It was fun and relatively harmless. We also got a "casino computer game" which was a casino video game using play money. I remember continuing to go "all-in" on the BJ table and "restarting the game" when I busted until I built up an account of $100M+. First Signs of Trouble: I remember counting down the days to my 18th birthday in order to create a PokerStars account. I signed up on my 18th birthday and started playing. I had some small wins, but was playing at very small stakes as I had little money. I accidentally overdrew my account and stopped after I lost that money. College: I attended one of the top ranked US universities to study biology with hopes of going to medical school. I was focused on academics and social life and didn't think of gambling at all, much less actually gamble save the occasional poker night. I experienced tremendous success in all facets of life during college. I was on top of the world and couldn't wait for life to start. To make things better I ended up getting accepted to my dream school, Harvard Med School. "Gambling to win my Harvard Med School Tuition" - I was fortunate enough to have a grandmother who offered to pay for my degree, which would have allowed me to finish debt free. Unfortunately, I watched a movie the summer before school where the protagonist, an MIT student, learns blackjack to win his Harvard Med School tuition. Of course it works because it's a movie, but I think how difficult could blackjack be. I'll learn the ropes and see what I can turn $100 into. Unbelievably, I managed to go on the heater of my life and turn the $100 into 90% of my tuition. I'm on top of the world and regularly making bets larger than my yearly salary. It was insane and I had the cash to cover the other 10%, but my selfish ass wanted to win it all. Naturally, I lost it all. Then it got bad...I was making these unbelievably large wagers with "house money", but I wanted to get it back so I started blowing through my savings. No luck as I'm gambling with pure emotion. I start putting money on credit cards and again start experiencing some success, but want to get everything back that I lost. Proceed to have a terrible experience of the gambler's fallacy (belief that prior hands impact future outcome) and lost 3x my salary in 4 hands. I was dealt 20 each time and the dealer ended up with 21 each time....terrible luck. Coming Clean: I had to tell my parents that I was deep in debt and no longer wanting to attend Harvard. I needed to get myself right, so I moved home and started attending GA. During this time I started working on a start-up and consumed myself with this startup. I ended up experiencing some early success and significant investor interest. I had $1M of investor money committed, but I was going to have to give up 25% of my company. Before doing that I thought I'll give gambling one more chance. It's been several months at this point and I won't be compulsive. My dumbass works up a massive payroll once again, but want to win my entire investment. I end up losing it and everything my business had already generated. Telling My Parents (Again) - Worst day of my life. Absolutely devastating to disappoint them like I did. Undeserving of the love and support that they showed. Cried like a baby the entire time. Committed to changing. Getting a Real Job - Deep in debt (Almost $100k) and having squandered away Harvard Med School and my own business I needed to buckle down, get a real job, and start working out of the debt. I'm living with my parents to save money and pay this off. I've got a decent job and should be able to pay it off in less than 2 years. Recently had a small slip up and was disgusted with myself, so much so that I don't think I'll play it again. I know I can't win my way out, and even if I did it would crush my loved ones that I turned back to gambling. What's Next - Stepping up and working through this. Attending GA, listening to podcasts, reading books, checking this group, posting/commenting often, etc. I cannot afford to continue on. I'm 27 and have sacrificed so much already, but can still turn it around. Don't want to ruin my life. Sorry for the novel.
My first poker game was five card draw in fourth period spare. We played in the hallway, outside of the lockers, until eventually a teacher shut us down. But we got in a few sessions. The second game I remember was on top of an internet cafe. Again we played five card draw. It was like a $5 or $10 buy in game. I remember once making a wheel and taking down the pot with a substantial bet; I showed my hand and there was debate over whether the ace even played as a one. Luckily no one had called me. At one point I dealt myself from the bottom of the deck. I wasn't cheating, I had literally no idea what the card was, I just dealt it to myself from the bottom. Stu, this big obese guy demanded to see my cards when I folded post draw. I had like jack high or whatever. Anyway, later on in that night we switched to inbeteween. You get two cards and have to bet on whether the card is going to be inbetween or not. If you post (hit a card on the outside, so if your two cards are K2 then you hit a K that is called posting and you have to pay double). It is pot limit. Anyway, the pot grew to be over a hundred dollars and I eventually did win it. From there it was $5 and $10 SNGs with my buddies, a regular $25 and then $50 cash game that I was a reg at for a couple of years, and online poker. This was all 16-17 years ago now, but that is when I started playing poker. Eventually I graduated to casino trips. I remember my first trip to Windsor Ontario, I put together a couple thousand dollars and spewed it all $100 at a time playing 1/2 NLHE. The guys there called me Frodo. I went bust a lot of times in those early days, usually with the meager couple hundred dollar bankroll I could scratch together. Then I had some success. This was during the poker boom, and I was able to build myself some six figure bankrolls from scratch, then bust them and start over again. Maybe a decade ago I switched to plo, although I still play NLHE cash. All of my adult life, I have been a professional poker player. This game is my life. The highs have been amazing. Battling against Isildur at 25/50 plo on Pokerstars, travelling across Canada, living in hotels for months on end, becoming a professional blackjack player (card counter), blowing crazy amounts of money, winning and losing fortunes, then starting over with a hundred dollars and a dream. Today my life is a lot different. I've got a wife and two kids. I've stopped partying, don't travel very much. I grind to support my family. Unlike most prospective horses, I'm far from broke. I've got a bankroll, and play every day, to earn enough money to support my family and to put a little away for a rainy day. That being said, there is a lot of potential in networking, and I like playing staked especially if my backer brings something else to table as well, like access to new games on pppoker or other apps. I also have references from previous satisfied backers. Here are a range of investment proposals, starting small and working our way up. Some of the larger plans would probably need to involve multiple backers, or one really rich dude. For some of these I could come on as an investor as well. So the smallest scale would be "rent a session". Essentially this is like backing someone to play a tournament, except I don't play tournaments I play cash games. The advantage here is that we can get started with minimal capital investment on your behalf. For example we could do something like 8 stacks of PLO $100 ($800) and you would get 75% of any upside from the session. No makeup. Just a one time deal and we're done, any losses are on you. I'm just spit-balling numbers here feel free to suggest alternate terms. Depending if I was to play say 6 tables for the session we'd want to have more capital on hand probably. Also it might be good to play PLO $50 AND PLO $100, so I can game select the best tables from either limit. Actually this rent a session approach would work best for live poker, where playing only one table and the slow pace of the game makes a > 300 bb swing unlikely (especially with my nitty style). But we could do live or online. So after that would be a longer term relationship. Backer puts up the bankroll (here you would be essentially called upon to have 30-40 buyins available to me, although I don't necessarily need them all at once) and gets a straight 50% split of profits with full makeup. So any time the bankroll is stuck, than any future winnings go clearing the makeup first. Minimum here would be something like PLO $50 or PLO $100, assuming you have access to some soft games, Indian sites, Chinese sites, pppoker clubs something like that. Another investment idea is to start a blackjack team. Actually this is quite a solid investment, if you can manage costs. Basically you get several card counters to play the same bankroll. Investors get a high ROI investment with a low time horizon and minimal ROR, and the players get a good chance to make bank with no or limited risk on their behalf. If you look at a typical counting simulation, taking a conservative approach of half kelly with resizing, the chance of busting before doubling is substantially less than 1%. So investors will be looking at a 50% return, obviously the amount of time it will take is unknown. Of course it is crucial to keep expenses in line here, so ideally you have a large enough bankroll that they don't matter because they are a small enough fraction, or work out some sort of team van situation. The absolute minimum here would be like 30k (but that could be 6x5k, not really that hard to find some people who might want to invest, I could invest as well), and the bigger the bankroll the better. Investors could be players as well, keeping a close on the money, it is super easy to train someone to count especially if they are winning poker players and knowledgeable gamblers in the first place. In addition to card counting there are other vulnerabilities, like hole carding, next card knowledge that can be capitalized on as well.

Stefan Kovach CCO at Funfair: Stefan was previously Marketing director at PokerStars for nearly 12 years. James Harrison Director of Corporate: James was Compliance and Licensing Director at Gaming Realms for 3 years, and CEO at AlchemyBet for 5 years, 5 months. The FUN Token: FUN is the native token that powers every aspect of the Funfair gaming ecosystem. I turned 21 about a month and a half ago, and have always had an infatuation with poker. I’ve watched hundreds of hours and played on those fake poker apps before finally joining pokerstars. Leading up to that moment I’ve done my best to read, listen and study pot odds & equity/ general strategy. Watched countless hand reviews. After a month I built up about a $400 bankroll online, through low stake cash games and some lucky spin & gos.... Then of course made the mistake of playing with my entire bankroll (I know I’m an idiot for this, I was feeling invincible and got a little greedy) and went all in with AA v KK, dude hits the river. I took a bit of a break from the app, my spirit slightly crushed after this & a bad beat in a relatively big tournament (for myself) where I was 2nd in chips down to the last 16 out of 80+ entrants & the only Person who has me covered jams my 4bet pre flop, I snap call with AA, he shows QQ and catches a lady on the flop. 2 weeks go by where I haven’t played any poker, and I find myself in a casino with a very large/popular poker room. I play 1/2 NL for the first time live, buy in for 100bb (rather than losing it all at the blackjack tables) and walked away after 3 hours up $210. Made some pretty painful lay downs and a few rookie mistakes for my first time, but was aggressive when I needed to be and got max value out of the few hands I had. But overall loved the interpersonal vibe of the table & people I was playing against. I also found it easier to play certain hands live compared to online. If I had the choice of live or online I’d take live games any day. Anybody else feel the same way, Is the transition from live poker to online more difficult than the other way around?

FunFair has been up to a lot of things, and thus, the post made a few months ago is quite outdated. I’ve written this just to keep the subreddit updated, and to have a nicely formatted post full of information regarding FunFair for both newcomers and “veterans”. What is FunFair?
FunFair is a decentralized gaming technology platform which uses the Ethereum blockchain, smart contracts, and proprietary state channels (Fate Channels) to deliver casino solutions with state of the art games that are fast, fun, and fair. When did they start the project?
Technically, FunFair started on June 22nd, 2017, because all FUN tokens that will ever exist were created on this day. However, the idea, technology, and product were being developed before the ICO started.
What have they accomplished to date?
FunFair have accomplished a lot since their inception- consistently updating development, business operations, and hiring many new staff. From Sponsoring DevCon 3, receiving awards from the Malta Gaming Awards, excellent showcase updates, and launching their product to the gaming industry at the International Casino Exhibition which boasted over 30,000 industry attendees, they have been on track to their public release. With the release of the closed beta right around the corner, the future is bright for FunFair.
Ok, so what is the technology? What are they developing?
FunFair is building their decentralized platform and protocol on top of Ethereum’s blockchain. FunFair is developing the game technology, and their proprietary, advanced state channel technology which they call Fate Channels. The platform that FunFair has created and continues to develop, will allow anyone to run a casino in just a few clicks, allow third party developers to distribute and integrate their own games to a new, global audience, while creating the ultimate casino experience for end users. Fate Channels are FunFair’s custom, proprietary version of State Channels. They are superior technology to current State Channels, as they are what support the communication during game sessions between player and casino, while executing entire game logic and random number generation off-chain. What really happens in the Fate Channels?
FunFair’s random number generation is executed within the Fate Channel, and is a commit/reveal scheme that makes it provably fair. There are also a hash chain to prove that the overall sequence is indeed fair. A player enters a FunFair-powered casino with some FUN tokens in their wallet, and then both the casino and player send FUN tokens from each of their personal wallets into a smart contract which then holds the FUN in escrow via the Fate Channels (off-chain) until the player cashes out/closes the channel. The player and casino swap random seeds that they have generated locally, and these are then hashed numerous times by both parties in private. The sequence of hashes are stored locally by each party. There could be thousands of hashes, which become the random numbers, and are passed one by one, in reverse order, by the casino to the player and vice versa when the game needs randomness. Since the hashes are in reverse order, a new hash will always hash into the previous one, so that it can be verified that it’s the correct value of the next hash. The first hash is committed in the state channel on the blockchain as it was opened, and this is what will be used later to reveal that the random number generation was correct. The position that a ball lands on in a roulette spin, for example, is computed this way. The two hashes provided by both player and casino are combined into a random number that neither side could have predicted. It’s provably fair because because it can be shown that they come from the same hash chain in the correct sequence, and it can be shown after the game session is over, using the reveal to show the seed was in fact, committed to the blockchain in advance of the games played. The random number generation scheme works extremely fast, and is not dependent and waiting on the blockchain for verification every time, yet it is provably fair in both randomness and sequence. It is easy to detect cheating by either side (for instance, the random number generations would go out of sequence). The security of the hash chain is what makes the randomness unpredictable. If it is possible to reverse a hash, you could predict the random number generation. FunFair uses SHA-3 for hash generation, which has not been reversed yet, and is likely to last in strength for some decades.

Casino operators will save significant money on hardware, chargebacks, and operational headcount. The number of physical servers required is reduced as gameplay executes in immutable smart contracts deployed to the ethereum network. An operator will, at all times, require a reserve of FUN tokens to ensure they are able to accept bets, and cover their liabilities. [SERIOUS] Pokerstars Live Casino Charges money without your knowledge
First ill explain what happenend. Pokerstars is charging money while playing live casino will u didnt bet that money. Also it doesnt show at the start of the hand but at the end of the hand or somehwere in between. Which seems odds to me, because it gives quite rapidly a error when u wasnt on time with betting. Also when i check the "Game History", it doesn't show any charges being made, while it clearly got charged of my "balance". (you can find a TL;DR at the end of this post, containing my yearly results and my goals for next year) My first contact with gambling started with the famous "use this strategy to get rich at XY" (XY being mostly blackjack or roulette). As i was still very young i believed these stupid things. I didnt know better. Hours after hours i played for playmoney online, and i got fascinated having the idea to win money by playing a game. After a while i finally learned that in every gambling game the edge is on the side of the casino. Every game? No. There is poker, a game of skill and psychology. A game where the better player can be a winner. I HAD to learn this game. So i bought a few books, and started learning. I only learned the very very basic stuff, but i thought that was enough. I deposited 10 bucks and started playing 2NL, with the occasional 5NL or 10NL mixed in because i was on tilt or "trying to win my money back". Obviously i was a total fish. I lost my money very fast, and got frustrated. Every now and then i came back to try but, who wouldve guessed, i lost over and over again. For christmas i got money to buy Pokertracker4, so i could finally track my results aswell. After a bit of trying everything out i decided that 6max Zoom was the game made for me. Action all the time and the ability to grind for hours without getting bored. Perfect. So i did. And i was winning, what a great feeling. With the things i learned i was able to beat 2NLz all by myself. I didnt care about the amount of money, which obviously was nothing, but i was making money all by myself, with a thing i loved doing. My passion grew with each and every day. At first my mother was against this whole thing. She didnt like it if i "gambled". Obviously she had no clue about poker not being gambling, but i was far away from being able to correctly explain it to her, as i was still a noob too, so i cant blame her. That is also the reason why i had such a big sample at 2NLz (100k hands), because i always had to move down again. I was getting more and more frustrated. And i was stubborn. I didnt even think about studying more to get better. I was just grinding and grinding each and every day, trying to finally get the succesfull shot. I was still somewhat active in the online community though. I started watching twitch streamers, and i even became mod in "KomodoDragonJesus"' stream. I started reading articles again and i recognized that if i wanted to beat 5NL i had to study again. So i did. And ca. in the middle of may i finally started winning. From one day to another i was good enough. It was like someone turned on a switch. The big thing i learned in these days was that i cant just grind the whole day, because i will be plateauing sooner or later. If i wanted to climb the ladder i needed to study all the time. I started reading more and more, most of it in the 2+2 forums. I started connecting with people, chatting with them over skype. It could be that that was the time where i started being active here on /poker. I was always a big fan of reddit, and i was happy that there was a sub for poker. This was the first time a major downswing hit me, and i got mad at the game, mad at myself for playing poorly, and so on. I never really took them serious, never really learned how to play them properly. But in august i had the luck to bink two of them. One was a 1.10 deepstacked MTT where i placed 3rd for 72$, and the other one was the Hot 1.10, where i got 4th for 243$. A MASSIVE boost for my bankroll. Suddenly i was rolled for 16NL, and i took the shot. It wasnt my first shot at it, but it was succesful. From here on its basically the same as always. I grinded, took shots at 25NLz, they didnt work out, i had to move back to 16NLz. I just finished school in summer, and since february i was living on my own in a small 1-room-appartment. I still devoted pretty much all of my free time to poker. Now that i had results and knowledge, i could also finally convince my parents that poker isn't gambling, and that its not bad to be a pokerplayer. My mother taught me to always have the right priorities in life, which i am very thankful for. I always made sure that i had enough time for my friends, my girlfriend, and school. Well maybe not school, but not because i couldnt. I simply decided that school wasnt worth my full attention anymore. My goal for the future was to study psychology, and even IF i put my full energy into school, i still wouldnt have been able to reach the grades i needed. And to get the spot at university it wouldnt matter if i was close to the requirements or more far away, i would need to wait the same time (or i would sue the university for a place, which i will try next year if they dont let me in. Yes, its possible to sue the university for a place to study, god i love my country sometimes :D) So it was irrelevant if i tried my hardest in school, or just made sure i could finish it and get my "abitur", which is german for the graduation from highschool. If i look back i can say for sure that i put more energy and time into poker and studying for poker than into learning for school. But because i already knew what i wanted and how i could get it i didnt regret this decision. The second big thing that happened was the legalization of online poker in Schleswig-Holstein, the nothern part of germany where i live in. Before they gave out licenses it was a grey area, so not totally illegal. But following that we got an own client, "pokerstars.sh", and a few rules, eg. not more than 10 tables open at a time etc.. These changes didnt affect me that much though, as i was always only playing 4 tables of zoom anyway. Then i had my first live poker experience. In september i decided to take a 50bb shot at 2/4 in my local casino. It was basically just meant for fun, because i never played live before and wanted to experience it. In my first night playing live i left with 1238€ profit. I decided this would be my live bankroll, and went to the casino about once per week. I grinded it up to 4.5k, then went down to 2.5k again. Here i chose to stop, because i needed money for next years vacation (me and my gf want to travel to japan, which will be very expensive). Also i felt like online lost the needed focus and dedication from me. To give online poker my full dedication i needed to get better. But learning by myself just wasnt good enough for me anymore. I needed to learn more efficient. I needed to get a coach. And i found one. We had coaching roughly once per week, and i learned so much every single day. I got better and better every day, and finally the day came where i would take a succesful shot at 25NLz. This is where i am right now. After exactly 1 year playing/studying i went from 2NLz to winning at 25NLz. So I haven't posted here before I don't think, I'm an Irish guy after moving to Beautiful British Columbia. I like poker and stuff. I've been playing poker 13 months now, I missed all these "poker booms" and started playing when poker was hard mode. This has been great for my learning but pretty disgusting for my wallet. However I battle on through with the dream of being able to outplay the best one day. I've kind of cycled through all forms of NLHE and dabblled here and there with other games. (Super unprofitabley in case your wondering :P ) I played a ton of HU SNGs which i think really helped my hand reading skills and being more LAGy. I played a bunch of the pokerstars big 2.20, hot 3.30 etc. never binking a win, getting some cashes here and there to keep me going back though. I then switched to 6max STT's which provided a nice win rate for me for a while. And lastly I switched to 6max zoom because I get impatient waiting for cards sometimes :P So all that was pretty -EV for me but I was figuring out what I liked and improving my game so whatever :) Then I decided to visit the casino, having been to the casino in my local hometown in Ireland before it was a very depressing place. One guy sitting losing all his money at blackjack and one sad and empty poker table. Visiting the Edgewater was a completely different mood. So many gamblers, a wait list for $1/$2, lights, drunk people! It was magical! :P I had brought $400 for my adventure, knowing I would loose it all. I played for maybe six hours, as nitty as can be playing pretty much JJ+ and ATs+ never really being to aggressive (mainly because I thought everyone was insane with their bet sizes) I ended that session at +$580 cashing out with $780. Naturally I was pretty excited! I went back again a few weekends later and dropped -$200 with KK vs AA allin pre, I played for like five hours after that and left with $500 basically just breaking even. I returned back to online with new hopes of becoming profitable on Pokerstars, switching to $5 zoom, however playing for so little just felt like a grind and boring now so I wasn't doing well. I played for maybe 16 hours on January 1st and went busto on pokerstars again, bringing me to a total of -$400 online. I have been hearing lots about how soft the 12pm live tournaments in the casinos are so decided to enter one yesterday in the Riverrock. It was a $50 + $10 buyin that I thought would get more people. I think it was like 25-30 entries or something? I cleaned up with next to no problem, I was amazed at how crazy people were playing at such low blinds, how fast people started to get eliminated. . I double KO'd two people in one hand where I had JJ, crazy aggro guy shoves pre, bad passive guy calls for rest of his stack, i call (my only option) (1/3 of my stack). I'm vs 88 + A7o and hold. Final table then and I'm the biggest stack by a lot. 3x the next highest chip leader. 4-5x most of the table. I just know I'm going to get top 3 and cash. Eliminate a guy who shoves with QQ, I have KK. (nice ;D) Eliminate a guy who shoves on a 9-8-3 rainbow board with K-9o. I had TT and he was maybe 1/4 of my stack at that stage. I had to have a think about calling since he seemed to be one of the better players but he did seem to be getting bored. The rest of the table were like "easy call what took so long". Then I call off a really short stack like 3bb or something with ATo and flop the old KQJ nuts and hold. Then some other hand happens between seat 4 and 5 and seat 4 is eliminated. Now we are final three. I get 33, raise 3x into unopened from the small blind , big blind complains that i always have a good hand and folds, I table 33. Then 3rd place turns to 2nd place and asks him if he wants to chop, mentions that I probably have no interest in a deal etc. I agree that I have no interest in a deal (im 3-4x their chip stacks) I want 1st place. So that's that. I cash out in first for $550 and 2nd guy and 3rd guy chop. Not a bad Friday and pretty happy with my bankroll building so far, hopefully I can keep this up over 2015!
